Housing has been nominated as a priority area for NDIS renewal led by the incoming Minister for Government Services and the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS), Bill Shorten. Therefore, it is timely to take stock of where we are and what needs to be done to secure the good housing NDIS Participants are entitled to.
This paper identifies what is needed to deliver the National Disability Insurance Agency's (NDIA) vision for the future of housing for NDIS Participants.
Five initiatives are proposed:
1. Develop a new Specialist Disability Accommodation (SDA) funding mechanism
2. Reach agreements with State/Territory Governments to redevelop their SDA Stock
3. Resource housing and homeless services to work with NDIS Participants
4. Add a whole of community approach to the NDIS individualised approach
5. Use NDIS funds for housing "the Other 94%", where it reduces NDIS costs
